How to Connect PC to HDMI TV




There are now many ways to enjoy your favorite movies and television shows over a broadband Internet connection on your computer for a small amount of money, or even for free.       Turn your computer off, and turn it around to view the rear of the unit. Find the cable that comes from the computer's monitor, and follow it to the back of the PC. The cable will be plugged into the output of the video card, which will be either a 15-pin VGA port or a 29-pin DVI port. If you are fortunate, there will be a second port directly next to it, of either the DVI or VGA variety. On the newest machines, you may even find a regular HDMI port on the card.

      Choose the connection for video output. If your computer has an HDMI port, you can simply connect an HDMI cord of the correct length between the computer and the TV. Otherwise, you will need to make a few decisions. If your computer has only a single video output and it will not be used solely with the television, you may want to invest in a new video card. Purchase one with either a DVI or an HDMI output, and install it in an available slot, according the instructions included with it. If you intend to use the VGA output on a single-output or dual-output card to drive the HDMI display, then a special device will be needed to convert between the formats. The price of the converter is actually about the same price as an entry-level video card that will be easier to use with your TV. In that case, it may be a wise idea to upgrade the card in order to obtain a DVI or HDMI port. However, if your chosen output port is DVI, an inexpensive DVI to HDMI cable can convert your computer's output into the proper HDMI input for your TV.

      Connect the HDMI cable from your television to your computer. Install the correct adapter or converter for your computer, if necessary. Unless your computer has HDMI output, cords will also need to be connected from the sound card output to the HDMI video cable or adapter, because HDMI carries both video and audio signals.

      Boot your PC, and configure the new display by selecting "Control Panel" from the "Start" Menu. Double-click the "Display" icon and click the "Settings" tab. The manual for your HDMI TV will list the screen resolutions it supports, along with the refresh rates. Configure the resolution in the "Settings" tab, and then click the "Advanced" button to set the refresh rate. If you are using the HDMI TV as the second monitor, you will also have to configure how it is used by Windows, according to the instructions pertaining to your video card. Most cards offer a "Clone" or "Mirror" mode, where both screens display the same content. Alternately, the "Extended Desktop" mode will allow each monitor to operate independently.

What Is the Difference Between a Digital FTA Receiver and a Decoder?

When many people think of satellite TV, they think of DBS (direct broadcast satellite) providers such as DirecTV and Dish Network that offer TV packages for a monthly subscription fee. Yihaodian, Backed by Wal-Mart, May Sell Shares

Yihaodian, the online supermarket whose investors include Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), may choose the U.S. for an initial public offering as it expands to challenge Chinese rivals including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Taobao.
The Shanghai-based retailer aims to break even in three years and will “most likely” sell shares to the public in the U.S., said Chairman Yu Gang, who co-founded the company in 2008 after working as a supply chain executive at Dell Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. There is no timetable for the sale, he said.
Yu expects to conclude the Wal-Mart investment agreement this month as Yihaodian aims for a larger slice of China’s online commerce market, which CLSA Ltd. estimates will almost double to 904 billion yuan ($140 billion) next year. Baidu Inc., China’s most popular search engine operator, and Sina Corp., which owns the nation’s third most-visited website, are among China-based companies that have chosen the U.S. for initial public offerings.
“We’ll do whatever it costs to secure a bigger slice of the market,” Yu, 52, said in a July 1 interview. “Market share is our top priority.”
To take on Taobao Mall, a unit of China’s biggest online commerce company, Yihaodian is expanding its workforce to about 3,000 employees by the end of this year from 2,000 now and adding a fifth warehouse this year, Yu said in Shanghai.
Quadrupling Sales
Sales at Yihaodian, which offers consumers 100,000 types of products from mayonnaise to disposable diapers, tablet computers and mobile phones, will almost quadruple this year to as much as 3 billion yuan from 805 million yuan in 2010, he said. Sales have been increasing about 28 percent a month on average, a pace Yu said he expects the company to keep.
Even at that rate, the online retailer has far to go to catch the market leaders, said Jim Tang, an analyst at Shenyin Wanguo Securities Co. in Shanghai.
“The rule for the e-commerce sector is that only the big get bigger,” Tang said by telephone. The challenge for Yihaodian is to boost its transaction volume and grab a bigger market share so that it can control costs, including purchasing, marketing and logistics, he said.
China’s Online Leaders
Taobao Mall led China’s business-to-consumer online market with 30 billion yuan of transactions in 2010, followed by 360buy Jingdong Mall with 10 billion yuan, according to IResearch Inc. Yihaodian ranks 10th, data from the Beijing-based research company shows.
Among China-based companies listed on U.S. exchanges, the four largest by market value are Internet businesses, Baidu, Sina, Netease.com Inc. and Ctrip.com International Ltd., according to Bloomberg data.
Yu founded Yihaodian with former Dell colleague Liu Junling, now the Chinese retailer’s chief executive officer. The two started the venture with their own savings.
Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer, agreed in May to buy an unspecified minority stake in Yihaodian to tap growth in China, the world’s fastest growing major economy. The companies didn’t disclose financial details.

    Data hog! Twitter's own iPhone app uses twice the data of Tweetdeck

    Remember all those big hints Twitter gave about not developing client apps any more? Well that’s working out well for them. It turns out their own, in-house client app for the iPhone is the worst of all the major Twitter apps for hogging data. In fact the official Twitter App uses double the data of the Tweetdeck iPhone app, according to a new study by mobile data management startup Onavo. Perhaps it’s just as well Twitter bought Tweetdeck recently…
    Of course, double the data usage can end up meaning double the cost, depending on your mobile contract and if you are roaming abroad. We’ve reached out to Twitter for comment on this.
    Since most mobile operators – including AT&T – now only offer capped data plans, iPhone users need to watch their data. Onavo found that the difference between Twitter for iPhone and TweetDeck could be as much as $2 a session, under the most extreme data plans.
    Onavo (an app which manages data on the iPhone which runs in the background) also found:
    ? More than one in five (22%) iPhone users in the US have a Twitter app installed. In Spain this rises to 34%, in China in drops to 7%.
    ? The most popular client is the native Twitter app (Twitter for iPhone – 65%), followed by TweetDeck and TweetBot (8% each) and EchoFon (4%)
    ? No two Twitter clients are the same when it comes to data consumption:
    - The most efficient is TweetDeck, followed by TweetBot
    - The biggest data hog: Twitter for iPhone, followed by EchoFon
    Of course, although a 140 character tweet doesn’t cost much, just check your Twitter timeline once a day for a month and you could use 3MB more data on Twitter than Tweetdeck.
    Of course, Onavo’s app says it can reduce data usage by up to a further 65%. In day to day use I’ve certianly found it is reducing mine, though I’ve not tracked it scientifically.

    Google TV 2.0 – a look into the Android 3.1 “Fishtank”

    One of the things that seemingly wasn’t covered much at Google I/O was Google TV. It was clearly difficult for the Android team to admit that Google TV was not received nearly as well as everyone had hoped. As cool as the Apple TV competitor was, it lacked some critical functionality in order to “bring the internet to the largest screen in your home”.
    We were told at Google I/O that all of us early adopters would be upgraded eventually to a revamped, re-imagined Google TV that was built on Android 3.1. During the conference, invitation requests for what was being called the Google TV “Fishtank” program were said to have been distributed. The idea was that this program would be an under-wraps program to get developers in on the Google TV 2.0 action before there was a proper SDK. Now, months after the event, we’ve been sent detailed images and explanations regarding Fishtank.
    This program is not currently public–according to our source there are less than 50 people in this program right now–but we’ve got some very interesting information. If you are a fan of Google TV or had high hopes for the program, you won’t want to miss this.
    The Fishtank
    There’s very little in the box that a Fishtank developer receives from Google. The shipping box contains an Intel CE4100 reference platform loaded with Google TV v2.0 beta, a power cord and a keyboard. The device itself is 12.5″ wide x 11″ deep x 2.5″ tall. The keyboard shipped with the device is the same wireless keyboard found with a Logitech Revue, only the reference unit does not have the receiver hard-wired, so you get a Logitech Unifying USB dongle to slide into the back of the device.  There’s not much known about what is inside the box, but we do know a bit about the CE4100 chipset. Intel’s System on a Chip, originally codenamed Sodaville, was built specifically for web connected set top boxes, using a 45nm architecture specifically built to handle internet and broadcast applications. Additionally, this chipset claims to be able to handle Flash and 3D gaming, which helps paint a picture for what these devices will be capable of.
    The inclusion of  the same Logitech keyboard found bundled with the review could be taken to suggest that Logitech is still a devoted partner in the Google TV product, and may even once again be a hardware partner for the 2.0 release. At this point nothing is confirmed.
    The back of this device shows quite a few more ports than what’s available on existing Google TV set top boxes, including coaxial ports, which would suggest Google has decided to let non-HD users enjoy Google TV as well. This is still a reference hardware, however, so there is nothing that says that any of these ports will be on the back of the next Google TV device, but it is clear that Google is allowing developers access to a great deal more video-in and video-out possibilities.
    Android 3.1-powered Google TV
    The device comes pre-loaded with Google TV 2.0 beta, which we’ve been told is a stripped down version of Android 3.1. It includes a Clock app and the Live TV function, which currently only receives a signal from the HDMI port. The only other app that comes pre-loaded on the box is Google Chrome–not the Android browser, an honest-to-goodness full version of Google Chrome.
    Navigating the OS shows the same deep blues and blacks found in Android 3.1, with optimized placement of items like the Settings and My Apps areas. Since there are so few apps, it’s difficult to get a sense for how multitasking works, but you can see  ”Dual View” which is likely the ability to run an app and stream TV at the same time, or maybe even run two apps side by side
    What developers are saying about the program
    We’re told Google communicates directly with the developers via a private Google Groups message board. This allows the Google team to field questions and allows the developers to help each other throughout the process. According to our source, one of the largest threads on this board is an ongoing argument between the developers and Google in regards to how the “Live TV” app works. Currently, Live TV functions in such a way that allows it to broadcast behind the home screen while you do something else. At this time, developers will not have access to the live TV feed while it’s not in direct focus.
    This apparently has become quite a point of contention, we’re told many of the developers earned there way into the program with ideas that directly involved this feature–specifically, the ability to overlay data on top of Live TV or to place Live TV in a smaller window while information is displayed. So far, Google has stated that while they would consider the feature, there are no plans at this point to make it available at the API level, which has upset a number of the developers, forcing some to scrap their original project entirely.
    So there you have it. Developers are hard at work with Google to bring us Google TV 2.0, powered by Android 3.1. If we are lucky enough to get any additional information on this project, expect to see it right here!

    Introducing SkyDrive for the modern web, built using HTML5

    We’re committed to making SkyDrive the best place to get access to your content from anywhere, collaborate on Office docs, and share photos. Mike recently talked about how we’re delivering access to your information seamlessly across devices – starting with Windows Phone.
    But a key part to delivering on our goals is having a great web experience that works across platforms. While over 100 million people have tried SkyDrive on the web, we know that there’s a lot more we can do to improve the experience. So starting today, we are launching a new version of the SkyDrive website. We took advantage of modern browsers and HTML5 to make SkyDrive faster, easier to navigate, and more beautiful for viewing photos. The new SkyDrive will be rolling out soon, so check back if you don’t see it right away.
    Here is a short video I’ve put together to give you an overview of the new SkyDrive.
    Faster
    Browser modernization has really opened up the window for us to rethink and re-architect how we build our websites. Whether it’s Hotmail or SkyDrive, taking advantage of the advancements in the browser space is critical to ensuring a fast and fluid experience. While we have always focused on improving the performance of our websites, it was clear that we had reached a point where the kinds of performance gains we were hoping for would not come without an assessment of our entire experience from the ground up. SkyDrive has been around since 2007 and was simply not built for the modern web.
    We focused our performance investments in the following areas:
    ?We improved many core tasks and scenarios. For example, clicking folders and navigating photo albums will go from 6-9 seconds down to 100-300 milliseconds, and we took advantage of hardware accelerated graphics to make it fast to click through photo slideshows. We’ll address additional core tasks in the future.
    ?We focused on building a site powered by HTML5 so that we could include advancements like HTML5 Video, CSS3, and client rendered experiences, as well as making sure our slide show experience was great in all browsers without any special software.
    ?We evaluated and removed anything that slowed the experience down or got in the way of a fast, clean site.
    ?With Internet Explorer 9 on Windows 7, you can pin SkyDrive to your taskbar for faster access to your files. You can create Word, Excel, or PowerPoint docs stored in the cloud in just one click.
    Easier to navigate
    SkyDrive has always provided access to your files on many desktop and mobile browsers. However, we’ve received a lot of feedback that it was hard to navigate with several entry points to your files (skydrive.live.com, office.live.com and photos.live.com) and with views that did not make it clear as to what was your stuff and what was shared with you. We’ve taken a fresh approach to solving this problem by providing a single place to see your photos, docs, files shared with you, and files in SkyDrive groups.
    One principle in designing the new site is that SkyDrive should be focused on putting your content front and center. The old SkyDrive had a summary of your recent stuff, things shared with you, and activity in your social feed. We heard from many of you that this was confusing and it required too many clicks to get to a document or album. We also looked at the current advertising placement on SkyDrive and decided that this didn’t make sense in this experience. We removed ads to create room for a pane of info about your files, so you can do things like open a doc in Word or Excel on the desktop, directly from SkyDrive.
    For many of you, this view will seem familiar because we decided to make the navigational elements and layout consistent with Windows. This has a couple of benefits: 1) Our 1 billion Windows customers will find the site to be familiar and easy to use, and 2) SkyDrive now fills the page, which really showcases your content using as much of the screen as you allow. This means that getting to your stuff will be more predictable and consistent with how you already work.
    If you’re wondering what happened to things like your recent docs and your social feed, don’t worry; they’re still here. You can always get to your recent documents under the Quick views entry or by clicking SkyDrive in the header. You can get to your social updates by going to http://live.com/ and using the photos and documents filter to get the specific items you’re looking for.
    For those of you who are using Internet Explorer 9, we’ve also provided a fast way to get to SkyDrive from your Windows Taskbar using Pinned Sites and Jump Lists. In doing so, you have even faster access to your SkyDrive and quick access to common tasks like creating Office documents
    But we’re not done, and we’re continuing to make SkyDrive even better. Since we take an iterative approach to building software, not all of SkyDrive has been redesigned at this time. There are parts of the experience like creating a new album, uploading, renaming files, sharing, and editing permissions that are also scheduled to get a makeover soon.
    More beautiful and fluid for photos
    One important area of focus for SkyDrive was on making your photos shine. For many of us, our photos represent our most cherished memories, and they deserve an immersive, fast experience that gets the browser out of the way and lets the photos speak for themselves. When you view your photos in SkyDrive, you get a clean, rich view that fills the browser.
    When you select an album, the new mosaic layout displays your pictures in a way that lets you see all your photos in their original aspect ratio. We create thumbnails that reflect the way you took the picture, whether it be a portrait, a landscape, or a panorama shot.
    Regardless of what screen you have, how big your browser window is, or how many photos you have, SkyDrive always arranges your photos in a clean layout that preserves the original aspect ratio. To do this, we use CSS3 Transitions, a new standard that lets us use subtle animations to rearrange the thumbnails when you resize the browser window. There are early levels of support already in Firefox 4+, Chrome X+, and in IE 10+.
    With infinite scrolling, we’ve eliminated pages in the photo viewing experience. Now, you can just scroll the page and see your photos quickly fill in. It looks and feels like a native application.
    To see the new photo album experience, just click a photo. The experience puts you in control of what you’re looking at and gets out of your way.
    The album viewer is built using HTML5 and supports a variety of browsers. If your browser supports accelerated graphics, like Internet Explorer 9, you’ll notice things are fast and fluid. We also take advantage of the HTML5 video tag to support playback of H.264 videos (up to 100 MB), which is also new for this release
    Additionally, these features all work in your SkyDrive groups as well. So if you have created a group for your family, soccer league, or any other group, you have the same lightning fast, beautiful experience interacting with your shared photos and documents. And we’ve brought things like one click access to your group mailing list right in SkyDrive.
